Rhodes-Vivour Admits That Peter Obi Knew About His Intention to Switch to ADC Party
In a surprising turn of events, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, a former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos, officially declared his switch to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday, 22nd June, 2023, at an event in Alimosho, Lagos State.
Rhodes-Vivour's decision to defect from the LP was a departure from Peter Obi's approach of engaging with opposition parties without leaving the Labour Party. Despite Peter Obi's continued engagement with opposition parties, Rhodes-Vivour's defection occurred.
The Nenadi Usman-led leadership of the Labour Party has criticised Rhodes-Vivour's decision, suggesting it was hasty and ill-advised. They argue that he should have taken a cue from Peter Obi's approach and continued to engage with opposition parties within the LP.
However, Rhodes-Vivour has dismissed claims that he abandoned Peter Obi, the erstwhile LP presidential candidate. He stated that they have all agreed on the need for a coalition in the opposition for a successful election. Interestingly, a representative of Obi was present at Rhodes-Vivour's declaration to the ADC, indicating a level of communication and alignment between the two.
Regardless of current positions, all parties are working towards the aim of a coalition. The question remains whether Rhodes-Vivour's defection will impact the coalition-building process or if it is a strategic move to strengthen the opposition's position in the upcoming elections.
