Ride Service Alert: Commencement of Uber Trips in Ulm - Essential Information You Should Be Aware Of

In the bustling city of Ulm, the taxi industry is gearing up for a potential shake-up. The Ulm Taxi Center has filed an application with the city administration to become a part of the Uber app, aiming to compete with the popular ride-hailing service.

Uber, a globally recognised brand, primarily operates as a mediator, connecting passengers with drivers via an innovative app. The service has revolutionised the transportation industry, offering a more convenient and often cheaper alternative to traditional taxis.

The appeal of Uber lies in its flexibility and competitive pricing. Unlike regulated taxi tariffs, Uber drivers are not bound by such restrictions, allowing the platform to offer lower prices. However, this pricing advantage can be linked to lower costs for drivers, less regulation, and sometimes disputed practices such as social dumping or insufficient licensing compliance.

Felix Gutsmann, managing director of the Ulm Taxi Center, sees this as an opportunity for local taxis to thrive. Over 10,000 taxis in Germany are already active on the Uber platform, and the company cooperates with local taxi and rental car companies, where drivers are often self-employed and use their own vehicles.

Emre Celik, a board member of the Donau Taxi, shares a similar vision. He wants his city to introduce a tariff corridor and a tariff obligation for rental car entrepreneurs, aiming to level the playing field for traditional taxis.

Uber, on the other hand, sees itself as a partner of both taxis and rental cars, aiming to provide additional revenue streams for both. The company makes money by keeping a commission on every ride, with the commission being in the low double-digit range on average.

The Ulm Taxi Center has requested the city's current tariff ordinance to be changed to allow for fixed prices in the Uber app, a move that could potentially reshape the local transportation landscape. As the city council deliberates, one thing is clear: the ride-hailing industry is set to bring about significant changes in Ulm.
