Ride-sharing giant Lyft extends its reach with the acquisition of multimodal transportation app Freenow
The transportation industry is set for a major shakeup, as ride-hailing giants Lyft, Inc. and Freenow have officially merged. This union, aimed at leveraging the usership within each company's operational areas, is expected to significantly impact a large number of personal vehicle trips annually.
The merger, announced by Lyft CEO David Risher, is not just about business growth. It's about bringing the best of both companies together, serving and connecting people worldwide. Freenow CEO Thomas Zimmermann and his leadership team will now report to Jeremy Bird, EVP of Driver Experience at Lyft.
The fourth annual CiTTi Awards, an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, will take place on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Recognising achievements and innovations in active travel, the awards offer a platform for the combined efforts of Lyft and Freenow to be celebrated. Since the start of 2024, the Lyft app has been opened 4.6 million times within Freenow's markets, and the Freenow app has been used 1.2 million times within Lyft's markets. The companies will continue collaborating closely to integrate their technologies and improve user experiences.
In terms of operational integration, country general managers at Freenow will continue to lead strategic operations in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy, Poland, France, and Austria. Both companies will also collaborate closely to integrate their operations.
The merger could potentially double Lyft's current addressable market to more than 300 billion personal vehicle trips per year. This union is a testament to the growing synergy between tech companies and the transportation sector, and it's an exciting time for both consumers and industry professionals alike.
