Rider Jim Crowley, who was set to replace Anmaat in the race, is now sidelined due to surgery following his gruesome injuries. His replaced position is now filled by another jockey.
Jim Crowley, the former champion jockey, is facing an extended spell on the sidelines following a fall at York on Sunday. The 47-year-old suffered a broken leg and fractured pelvis, and underwent surgery on Monday. Angus Gold, Shadwell's racing manager, confirmed that Crowley's injuries are severe, and no decisions have been made regarding replacements for him on Shadwell's horses for the remainder of the season.
Crowley's fall at York was not an isolated incident, as Trevor Whelan also suffered a broken leg in the same race. Both riders were taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.
In a positive development for Shadwell, Chris Hayes, who has ridden for Shadwell for several years and won the Irish 2,000 Guineas for them on Awtaad in 2016, has been called up to ride Owen Burrows' horse, Anmaat, in the Irish Champion Stakes. Anmaat, a general 8-1 shot for the race, is expected to benefit from the rain forecasted for the weekend, as he likes to get his toe in.
Anmaat ran a brilliant race in the Prince Of Wales's earlier in the year when the ground was quicker than he'd like. In a notable victory last year, he beat Calandagan in the Champion Stakes at Ascot. Owen Burrows has confirmed that Hayes will ride Anmaat at the weekend.
Shadwell, powerful owners for whom Crowley is the retained rider, need to find replacements for him for the remainder of the season. The exact nature of Crowley's injuries beyond a broken leg and pelvis is not yet known.
Jim Crowley's injuries are a significant blow to the racing world, and his extended absence will be felt by both Shadwell and his fellow riders. However, with Chris Hayes stepping in to ride Anmaat in the Irish Champion Stakes, there is some hope for Shadwell's season.
