Rideshare Update: Incidents of Assault, Technical Mishaps with Robotaxis, and Settlement Agreements

In a significant development, Uber Eats has agreed to pay a combined total of $38,672,541.75 in fines, back pay, interest, damages, and civil penalties to the city of Seattle and 16,120 affected workers in Seattle and Los Angeles.

The settlement, which was reached on July 18, comes after a rideshare passenger was assaulted in Chicago by a driver of a gray Toyota Prius. The incident, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. in the 800 block of West Superior Street, left a 29-year-old woman in need of medical attention. She was taken to St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital for an evaluation. The suspect tried to flee after the assault but struck a pole and was taken into police custody.

The assault is not the only issue Uber Eats is facing. An investigation found that the company violated the city's Independent Contractor Protections law. The violation was related to the Boost promotion, where Uber Eats did not disclose that the Boost multiplier only applied to part of the worker's fare. As a result, the majority of the settlement - more than $13 million - was related to these alleged violations.

Uber Eats will pay $33,680.26 in fines to the city of Seattle as part of the settlement. The company will also pay $14,991,841.49 to the affected workers by Sept. 1.

Bryant Greening of Legal Rideshare, the first law firm in the United States to focus exclusively on Uber®, Lyft®, robotaxis, Waymo, and gig worker accidents and injuries, advises rideshare users to trust their instincts and not get into a ride if something feels off. If a problem arises during a ride, he recommends contacting the police or a loved one immediately.

LegalRideshare offers free consultations to those affected by such incidents. The firm has been instrumental in helping many rideshare users navigate the complexities of these cases.

In a separate incident, Frank Downing and Sam Korus took a field trip in Tesla's robotaxi in Austin. However, the details of this incident, known as the "Tesla Robotaxi Fail", are not yet clear.

The settlement includes damages for the assault victim and back pay, interest, and civil penalties for the affected workers. This marks a significant step towards ensuring fair treatment for rideshare workers and the safety of rideshare passengers.
