In the heart of the Rhineland, the city of Neuss and its surrounding areas are gearing up for a special celebration. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Beuys, a renowned German artist who left an indelible mark on the world of art and culture.

If you've recently subscribed to the Rhein-Kreis Neuss newsletter, you'll find detailed information about the Joseph Beuys celebrations. Rest assured, our newsletter is not spam. You can learn more about our privacy policy at rhein-kreis-neuss.de/privacy-policy.

Beuys' connection to Neuss and the Lower Rhine runs deep. One of his most significant collaborations was with Anatol Herzfeld, a student of Beuys from the mid-1960s who became his master student. Together, they carried out the action called "The Return of Professor Beuys."

In the city of Meerbusch, three stations invite you to walk in Beuys' footsteps. A large granite head remembers the artist, and you can find the sculpture "Resurrection Symbol" hanging in the old church tower in Büderich.

For those who prefer cycling, a themed bike route called "Beuys & Bike" has been developed by Tourism NRW e.V. and partners. Nearly 50 km of the 300 km long bike tour lead to sites of Beuys' professional activities and artistic legacy in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss.

The project team was supported by the economic development of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss. For tourist-related questions, you can contact Steffi Lorbeer at the district administration. Her phone number is 0 21 31/928 75 10, and her email address is [email protected].

An early work by Beuys can be seen on the Büderich cemetery, and he shared a studio with Erwin Heerich during his studies with Ewald Matare. Beuys was also connected to the island of Hombroich in Neuss.

The detailed program for the Joseph Beuys celebrations can be found at beuys2021.de. Don't forget to check your inbox or spam folder to confirm your newsletter subscription.
