Rise in cybercrime victims among internet users

A recent survey conducted by Bitkom Research has shed light on the prevalence of cybercrime in Germany, revealing a significant level of online threats and attacks faced by internet users in the country.

The survey, which involved 1,016 participants aged 16 and above, found that 61% of German internet users experienced cybercrime in 2020, an increase from 55% in the previous year.

One of the most common forms of cybercrime was the unauthorised sharing of personal data, with one in three (33%) users reporting that their data had been shared without their consent. This was followed closely by digital identity theft, with six percent of users reporting that their identity had been stolen, and five percent receiving unwanted emails in their name.

Malware on smartphones or computers was the most common issue, affecting nearly half of users (48%). One in ten reported being scammed during online banking, and 13% experienced verbal attacks or insults online.

Sexual harassment was also a concern, with 12% of online users reporting such experiences. Furthermore, six percent encountered unconstitutional symbols or extremist statements online.

The survey also revealed that 15% of German internet users were scammed while shopping or conducting business online in the past 12 months. One in ten reported being scammed during online banking.

The survey was conducted by Bitkom Research by telephone with 1,016 internet users aged 16 and above. However, the exact frequency of reported cybercrime offenses in Germany for 2021 is not explicitly provided in the available search results. Police data show 30,115 cybercrime cases in Germany in 2021, indicating a significant level of cybercrime activity during that period.

In conclusion, the survey highlights the growing concern of cybercrime among German internet users. It is crucial for individuals to take precautions to protect their personal information and online accounts, and for authorities to continue to address this issue and provide support to victims.
