Rivian initiates recall of 23 R1S and R1T models due to potential risk of sudden power failure.

In a recent announcement, electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has initiated a recall of 23 R1S and R1T vehicles produced between 2024 and 2025. The recall was prompted by a potential electrical fault that can cause a sudden loss of power, a safety-critical issue.

The fault is attributed to improperly grounded connections inside the High Voltage Distribution Boxes within the power unit. These boxes are responsible for regulating the flow of electricity from the battery pack to the on-board motors.

Rivian became aware of the issue in March 2025. The vehicles affected were manufactured between September 25, 2024, and February 19, 2025. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has also announced the recall.

In response, Rivian will inspect and repair the ground strap joint of the High Voltage Distribution Boxes, or replace the high voltage battery pack if necessary, at no charge to the customer. The company estimates that only 25% of the recalled vehicles have any potential issue.

Affected customers will receive a letter from Rivian by October 3. If you own a Rivian R1S or R1T and are unsure if your vehicle is affected, you can contact Rivian at 1-888-748-4621 and cite recall FSAM-1723.

It is important to note that an improper grounding of the High Voltage Distribution Box can cause it to shut down, resulting in the vehicle losing drive power. This is a serious safety concern and Rivian urges all affected customers to get their vehicles checked and repaired as soon as possible.

Rivian remains committed to providing safe and reliable vehicles to its customers and is taking proactive steps to address this issue. The company continues to work closely with the NHTSA to ensure the recall is carried out effectively and efficiently.
