Road section A4, adjacent to Cologne, remains closed for a fortnight
The Autobahn 4 (A4) near Cologne will be closed in the direction of Olpe for one and a half weeks, starting from Friday evening (10 PM), due to urgent repair work on a severely damaged road surface.
The affected section is between the Cologne-West motorway junction and the Eifeltor interchange. The closure will last until the morning of September 22. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes, such as the A1 towards Dortmund from the Cologne-West junction and the A3 to the Cologne-Ost junction.
The Eifeltor bridge, which carries the A4 over railway tracks, is damaged and requires repair. The impact on traffic on the Cologne Ring will be "significant," according to the Autobahn GmbH. To manage traffic more effectively, a clearer "staggered separation" of lanes aims to ensure that trucks only use the right-hand lane of the three available on the A4.
The repair work on the Eifeltor bridge is part of the reason for the closure of the A4 between the Cologne-West motorway junction and the Eifeltor interchange. The damage to the Eifeltor bridge is caused by Deutsche Bahn. However, further information about the name of the bridge owner who caused the damage or the scheduled repair date is not currently available.
Motorists should expect increased congestion, especially during morning and afternoon rush hours, due to the closure and repair work. The restrictions on the A4 are expected to remain in place for several years until the bridge is rebuilt.
In June, traffic management in the direction of Aachen on the A4 was optimized following several truck accidents. A similar rearrangement of lanes is planned for the direction of Olpe on the A4.
It is important to note that there may be more congestion, especially during rush hour, due to the closure. Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and to consider using alternative routes to avoid delays.
