Rohrdorfer initiates innovative clay plant with temperature control technology
Rohrdorfer Betonwerke (RBW) has made a significant stride in the realm of sustainable construction, as their new test facility, built in collaboration with Fives FCB and EnviTec, has been awarded the "Sicher mit System" certification seal of the Berufsgenossenschaft Rohstoffe und chemische Industrie (BG RCI).
Located directly next to the rotary kiln at the Rohrdorfer works in Lanhofen, Berglern, and Dollnstein, the facility was designed to leverage the existing waste heat from clinker production. This strategic placement not only reduces energy consumption but also contributes to the overall efficiency of the production line.
The facility, funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy and the European Union as part of a pilot project, uses a specially designed flash calciner to temper the tones with minimal primary energy. This innovative approach is a central building block in RBW's decarbonization plan, as tempered tones serve as a lower CO2 alternative to clinker.
The project, which commenced in October 2023, is scheduled to conclude in December 2026. During its operation, the exhaust gases generated are fed to the existing exhaust gas purification of the clinker production line, ensuring no additional emissions are produced.
The facility, with a maximum production capacity of 50 tons of tempered tone per day, is researching the use of tempered tones in construction. RBW has successfully undergone another audit and has again received the "Sicher mit System" seal, demonstrating their commitment to a comprehensive occupational safety management system.
The company first received this prestigious award in 2018, a testament to their continuous efforts towards safety and sustainability. The project, due to its innovation potential, received funding of up to 8.65 million euros. The construction phase of the facility lasted around six months, with EnviTec, a company specializing in planning, construction, commissioning, and operation of biogas and gas upgrading plants, including test centers, overseeing the planning and construction process.
This groundbreaking test facility marks a significant step forward in RBW's mission to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable construction practices. With the "Sicher mit System" certification, RBW continues to set an example for safety and sustainability in the industry.
