Romanian authorities aim to boost document processing efficiency with a 15 million euro investment in Robotic Process Automation (RPA) technology
The Romanian government has approved a memorandum on August 21, 2022, extending a EUR 15 million contract with UiPath for automating public administration processes until the end of August 2026.
The memorandum, promoted by Radu Miruta, the economy minister of USR, proposes to extend the implementation period of the financing contract until August 31, 2026. The project was initially scheduled to be completed before the end of 2025, but the exact details of how the extension will impact the completion of the project are not specified in the announcement.
At least 18 central public institutions mandated to implement RPA solutions, according to the August 2021 government-approved memorandum, primarily include various federal and state authorities involved in digital administration modernization. Specific institutions are not named explicitly in the available sources.
The service contract for the automation of RPA robotic work processes has an implementation period of at least 12 months. The investment for RPA solutions is financed from the PNRR, the National Relaunch and Resilience Plan.
RPA solutions refer to software automation of processes. This extension comes after the project was previously scrapped due to doubts about meeting the PNRR deadline. The reasons for the extension and the implications for the public administration are not clarified in the announcement.
Dragos Pislaru, the investments minister of REPER, was also involved in the promotion of the memorandum. The announcement was made by Radu Mihaiu, a USR MP.
The original project implementation period was December 31, 2025, and the extension of the contract is not mentioned in the original contract signed in 2019. The project extension was not mentioned in the original contract as well.
This extension is significant as it aims to modernize the public administration sector and improve efficiency through the use of RPA solutions. However, the full impact of the extension and the reasons behind it remain unclear at this time.
