Romania's Ministry of Economy Temporarily Halts Registrations for State-Owned Company Positions

In an unprecedented move, Romania's Ministry of Economy has temporarily suspended registrations for positions in the boards of directors of state-owned companies. The decision, announced on August 27, 2021, comes in response to an overwhelming number of applications, over 2,000 CVs received in less than a week.

The surge in applications was triggered by a call to action issued by Radu Mirută, the Minister of Economy, on August 21, 2021. Mr. Mirută invited professionals with legal, economic, and managerial experience to get involved in the turnaround of the state-owned companies. The Ministry launched an option on its website for specialists to apply for management positions or as administrators in state-owned companies.

The Ministry believes it is honest to temporarily suspend registrations to analyze all applications carefully. The amount of applications exceeds the human resources currently available for processing, making it necessary to pause the registration process.

The suspension is not the only recent development in the management of Romania's state-owned enterprises. Earlier this month, the government initiated the process to appoint new leadership for the Agency for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Performance of Public Enterprises (AMEPIP). The appointment of new leadership for AMEPIP is critical to receiving funding under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which requires Romania to ensure proper governance of its state-owned enterprises.

Despite the temporary halt, the Ministry's call for professionals remains open. The need for skilled individuals to help navigate Romania's state-owned companies through challenging times is more pressing than ever. The Ministry's Facebook post, announcing the suspension, has been quoted by Hotnews.ro, emphasising the importance of this initiative.

As the Ministry works through the mountain of applications, it is hoped that the temporary suspension will not deter potential candidates. The future of Romania's state-owned companies lies in the hands of those with the expertise and passion to drive change, and the Ministry looks forward to welcoming them on board.
