Romanian President tours mountain town of Roșia Montană, renowned for anti-mining demonstrations
In a recent visit to the mountain village of Rosia Montana, President Nicusor Dan signaled a new era for the UNESCO World Heritage site. The Romanian leader expressed the need for private investors to fund the restoration of buildings in the village, which has been a topic of discussion for several years.
The area, known for its rich gold deposits, has a history that dates back 150 years before the occupation of Dacia by the Romans. With over 150 kilometers of galleries in the depths of the four mountain massifs around Rosia Montana, the village boasts an extensive network of Roman-era gold mining galleries, including 7 kilometers that are still accessible.
President Dan emphasized the importance of highlighting this unique site in local tourist attractions. He lamented that it would be a shame for such a significant historical site to be overlooked. The President's sentiments were echoed when he visited the volunteers of the "Adopt a House at Rosia Montana" program, an initiative started in 2012 to help restore buildings in the village.
Photos of the President with these volunteers were posted on the organization's Facebook page on August 18, marking a notable moment in the program's history. The President also suggested a public-private partnership to fund the restoration, although the potential investors have yet to be explicitly identified.
However, it appears that Gabriel Resources Ltd., a Canadian company with a significant equity interest in the Roșia Montană mining project, could be a key stakeholder. Despite the rejection of its mining license extension in June 2024, the company remains a potential player in the tourism project.
Since the end of the gold mining project in 2021, no tourist development project has been announced in the area. President Dan aims to change this, expressing his goal to encourage Romanians to visit their country and support the revitalization of historical sites like Rosia Montana.
The President's visit to Rosia Montana comes at a time when the site is gaining renewed attention. In 2021, the site was included on UNESCO's World Heritage list, ending the long-standing gold mining project. With the President's push for tourism development, Rosia Montana may soon regain its former glory as a significant tourist destination.
