Annabella Expands Romanian Supermarket Empire

In a significant move, Romanian supermarket chain Annabella is set to grow its presence in the country with the acquisition of 82 Profi and 5 Mega Image stores. The deal, which has been finalised, will see Annabella exceed 200 stores nationwide.

The acquisition, valued at nearly EUR 1.3 billion, was completed by Ahold Delhaize. The 87 stores taken over by Annabella will nearly double the number of stores operated by the Romanian entrepreneurial chain.

Annabella, the only Romanian chain to have reached a network of over 100 supermarkets in Romania, is expanding its territorial footprint to include cities such as Timișoara, Oradea, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Adjud, Constanța, and Ploiești.

The founders of Annabella, Dan-Constantin Mutu and Dorina Mutu, are not mentioned in the provided search results, but the chain has been developed by local entrepreneurs. Annabella operates on three different retail concepts - Annabella AZ, Annabella Zilnic, and Annabella Standard.

The network of Annabella currently has over 118 stores in four counties - Vălcea, Argeș̦, Olt, and Dămbovița. However, with the recent acquisition, the chain's reach is set to expand significantly.

Meanwhile, another player in the Romanian retail sector, Fabrica de Conserve Râureni, a part of the Annabella group, reported a net profit of EUR 2.7 million last year, down 11%. The company also saw a decrease in turnover, with a total of nearly RON 176 million (EUR 35.3 million) last year, down 5% compared to 2023.

The deal aimed at facilitating the expansion of Mega Image retail chain, which took over Profi from MidEuropa Partners for EUR 1.3 billion. The acquisition of Profi by Mega Image is not directly related to Annabella's growth, but it marks a significant shift in the Romanian retail landscape.

As Annabella continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how the chain adapts to its expanded network and how it maintains its competitive edge in the ever-evolving retail market.
