Röttgen alleges Schröder's implication in the concealing of evidence regarding the Navalny case

In an interview with Bild newspaper, Norbert Röttgen, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag and a CDU candidate for the party's leadership, has urged for targeted sanctions against the entourage of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Röttgen's call comes in the wake of the poisoning of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny with a Russian nerve agent in Russia. The directly responsible persons in this case have been widely reported to include members of the Russian security services, particularly the FSB.

Röttgen demands targeted sanctions primarily against high-ranking officials and operatives associated with the Kremlin and security agencies involved in the attack. He emphasises that both the money and the people should be targeted for sanctions.

Röttgen has been critical of former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who is currently in paid service in the Russian oil and gas business. He has accused Schröder of covering up and concealing Russia's responsibility in the Alexei Navalny case, a behaviour he finds shameful to many Germans.

Röttgen's statements reflect a broader view of the Putin system, which he sees as based on a connection between the security and repression apparatus and an oligarchic billionaire system. The billionaires in this system, according to Röttgen, oppress their people during the week and then spend and launder their money in Europe, particularly in cities like London and Munich.

Schröder's ties with Russia have been a contentious issue, with Röttgen and others questioning his impartiality in dealing with Russian affairs. The debate over sanctions against Russia and its entourage is expected to continue as the international community seeks to hold those responsible for crimes accountable.
