Royal Sojourn's Fiscally Sensible and Humble Aspects: Observations from a Regal Journey on August 27, 1925

In August 2025, the city of Meiningen will pay tribute to a significant historical event that took place 180 years prior, the only known visit of British Queen Victoria to the city. On this day, August 27, the city will host a small, elegant event to commemorate the occasion.

The visit was arranged by Duke Bernhard II of Saxe-Meiningen, who extended the invitation to Queen Victoria personally. In a remarkable twist of fate, Duke Bernhard II's sister, Princess Adelheid of Saxe-Meiningen, had become Queen Adelaide of Britain in 1830 upon her marriage to King William IV. Queen Adelaide was not only the aunt of Queen Victoria but also the mother of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert.

The familial ties between Meiningen and the British royal family were closer than commonly known, and this historical visit was a testament to this unique connection. Duke Bernhard II traveled to Coburg specifically to deliver his invitation, and Queen Victoria, accompanied by her husband Prince Albert and a small entourage, made the journey from Coburg to Schloss Reinhardsbrunn in 1845.

The event in 2025 will take place between 1:30 and 2 PM on Bernhardstraße, inviting guests and locals to feel royally welcomed. The event will feature the opportunity to enjoy Victoria wine or tea while discussing Elisa Jakob's upcoming novel biography of Victoria and Meiningen's role in it.

In a special gesture, a limited edition "royal Meiningen pen" will be available at a special price of 99 cents, instead of the regular 2.45 €. Additionally, author Elisa Jakob will be available from 2 to 4 PM at the tourist information to discuss her novel and answer any questions.

Duke Bernhard II will be symbolically honored on this day for his efforts to secure Queen Victoria's visit. The details of the event's honors for Duke Bernhard II remain a secret until the day of the event, adding an air of anticipation to the commemoration.

Dirk Bradschetl from the city marketing announced the event, inviting everyone to join in celebrating this important piece of history and the unique bond between Meiningen and the British royal family.
