Running Olympic Torchbearers: Who Are They Striving For? (2) Jyunnosuke Suemune's Perseverance: "Achieving greatness through diligent effort, even for someone like me on the public stage"
Toyota Employee Jyunnosuke Suemune: From Car Painter to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torchbearer
Jyunnosuke Suemune, a dedicated car painter at Toyota's Tsutsumi Plant, has achieved an extraordinary milestone. Originally scheduled to coincide with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay, a series of articles aimed to introduce the Toyota employees selected as torchbearers, and Suemune was among them.
Suemune, who currently paints the right front inner section of cars, including the Prius and Camry, has always been committed to ensuring the color always looks its best for the driver. His journey, however, has not been without its challenges.
Born with a hearing impairment in one ear, Suemune faced bullying and communication struggles in early elementary school. These hardships, however, did not deter him. Instead, they fueled his determination to overcome adversity and create something meaningful.
Inspired by the cars he saw in his father's vehicle, Suemune joined Toyota in 2017 with a dream to contribute to automobile manufacturing. His dedication did not go unnoticed, and his section leader played a significant role in his selection as a Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay torchbearer.
Being chosen as a torchbearer is a testament to Suemune's shift in attitude from "I can't" to "I can". His motivation for running as a torchbearer was to run "for someone else". The experience has raised the level of challenge Suemune will take on next, as he strives to join the Paint Division's A team, a team that competes in the annual 'Toyota Ekiden (in-house short marathon relay race)'.
Suemune's selection as a torchbearer has brought about a new feeling in his mind. He is developing a new sense of care and precision in his work, aiming to do each process better than before. This newfound determination has also led him to overcome his initial struggles when he started painting Lexus ES in January 2020.
The Ekiden event has allowed Suemune to meet others and expand his horizons beyond what they were before joining Toyota. He has learned from his colleagues, overcoming his hardships by learning from others who had also experienced bullying and taking the initiative to actively communicate.
Unfortunately, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay and the series of articles have been postponed due to the postponement of Tokyo 2020. Despite this setback, Suemune continues to challenge himself and is determined to never give up, aiming to change his mindset to 'I can' from "I cannot".
As for the future, Suemune aspires to become a section leader, called 'kumicho', in the Toyota Paint Division. The person representing Suemune as successor when the Paint Division and the Plastics Molding Division merge has not been specified. Regardless, Suemune's story serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating that with determination and perseverance, one can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.
