Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX Breaks Electric Vehicle Distance Records

During the Formula 1 summer break, an historic event took place at the high-speed track in Nardo, Italy. A team, led by Mercedes-Benz, attempted to break several electric vehicle distance records using the Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX, a fully electric vehicle.

The event, which took place between the races in Budapest and Zandvoort, saw George Russell, Formula 1 driver for Mercedes, participate to support the project and demonstrate the speed that can be achieved with electric vehicles.

The Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX, equipped with three compact Yasa axial flux motors and a total power of over 1,000 kW (1,360 hp), proved to be a formidable machine. The team broke 25 long-distance records, including the record for the greatest distance an electric vehicle has ever covered in 24 hours, achieving 5,479 kilometers.

Moreover, the team completed the distance around the Earth's equator of 40,075 kilometers in just 7 days, 13 hours, and 24 minutes. The vehicle's impressive speed was evident, with Russell averaging 300 km/h during his stint in the vehicle.

The strength of the axial flux motors in the GT XX, according to the manufacturer, is three times the power density of standard electric motors, with only one-third the space. This design is expected to revolutionize the driving experience, both on racetracks and on the road.

The GT XX's direct-cooled battery is powerful enough to recharge in pit stops lasting only a minute with 900 kilowatts. These rapid recharging times were demonstrated during the event, with pit stops lasting just a minute to recharge the battery.

A team of experienced racing drivers took turns driving the GT XX, including Doriane Pin, Fabian Vettel, Luca Stolz, Norbert Siedler, Adam Christodoulou, and Uwe Nittel. The event was also attended by Maro Engel, Hamza Owega, and Daniel Juncadella.

George Russell, who did not drive his Formula 1 racing car during the event, expressed his impression of the GT XX, stating that the axial flux motors respond as immediately and precisely as a Formula 1 engine, with endurance similar to internal combustion engines.

The record attempt with the Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX in Nardo was not just a showcase for the speed and efficiency of electric vehicles, but also for the future of electric motors and batteries. The team's ultimate goal was to drive around the world in eight days, inspired by Jules Verne's novel "Around the World in 80 Days". While they did not achieve this goal in this attempt, the records they did break demonstrate the potential of electric vehicles in the future.
