Russia, according to Sviridenko at the United Nations Security Council, chooses violence over diplomacy.
In a grim turn of events, Russia's night attack campaign on Ukraine on August 28, 2025, has led to a call for intensified diplomatic, economic, and military measures against Russia. The appeal was made following an emergency session of the UN Security Council, convened at Ukraine's request, in the aftermath of the attack.
The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of 25 people, including four children. Among the youngest victims was a child under three years old, born under Russian shelling in October 2022 and killed by Russian shelling in August 2025. Sixty-three civilians, including 11 children, were also injured in the attack.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyridenko addressed the UN Security Council on August 29, 2025, and emphasized that Ukraine urgently needs additional air defense systems to protect its citizens. She also stated that Ukraine needs long-range strike capabilities to neutralize Russian military targets.
The Prime Minister further highlighted that Russia is choosing the path of killings instead of ending the war. She stressed the need for personal sanctions to be strengthened against Russian political and military leadership, and for strict tariffs to be implemented to undermine Russia's military economy.
In response, the United States and its European allies have threatened additional economic sanctions and approved increased military support to Ukraine. This includes Starlink services and Patriot air defense systems.
The EU is urged to approve its 16th sanctions package as soon as possible. Additionally, there have been calls for Russia to be completely disconnected from international financial systems.
The attack included Shahed drones, other unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise, and ballistic missiles. Tens of thousands of children have been abducted by Russian forces, and at least 20 children have been raped by Russian soldiers since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Furthermore, 2139 children have been injured during the same period, and 2193 children are currently considered missing. The situation is particularly dire for the 1.6 million Ukrainian children under Russian control in occupied territories.
As the international community continues to respond to these atrocities, it is clear that urgent action is needed to bring an end to the violence and protect the innocent lives caught in the crossfire.
