Russia-Antagonistic: Zelenskyy Seeks Alliance with China, As Putin Remains Adversary

In the heart of Asia, China prepares to host the largest Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit since the organisation's founding. The summit, scheduled during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit, promises to be a significant event, given the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been vocal about the need for international pressure on Russia, particularly criticising China for allowing Russia to wage war. Reports suggest that civilian casualties have been a sad reality of the ongoing conflict, with overnight attacks resulting in more lives lost.

Zelensky, in a recent conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urged him to condemn Russia's war against Ukraine at the SCO summit and push for a ceasefire. This plea comes as Zelensky continues to demand a ceasefire as a precondition for negotiations, while Putin insists on peace talks without a prior ceasefire.

As the conflict continues, Putin's four-day trip to China begins with the SCO summit in Tianjin. The planned meeting between Zelensky, Xi Jinping, and Putin is set to take place in Beijing, with Putin aiming to strengthen his influence in Asia and secure international support through the SCO alliance.

However, the Russian leadership shows no signs of willingness to end the war despite Western appeals. The Russian Chief of Staff Gerasimov announced new targets for an autumn offensive, with attacks currently underway along the entire front line. This aggressive stance has led to reports of Ukrainians near the front blasting Putin, as seen in a report by "SPIEGEL".

Following a heavy airstrike in Kyiv that claimed over 20 lives, Zelensky accused Russia of making countries like India and China complicit in the war by their silence. Despite back-channel talks with several countries, including Qatar and Switzerland, Zelensky remains open to meeting with Putin, but concrete outcomes have yet to be achieved.

As the world watches, the SCO summit in China promises to be a pivotal moment, with the potential to shape the future of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
