Russia asserts control over approximately half of Kupiansk Ukrainian city, while Kyiv declares these claims as false

In the heart of Ukraine's Kharkiv region, the city of Kupiansk continues to be a focal point of intense military activity and heavy fighting. The city has witnessed months of increased Russian military activity, with both sides reporting clashes and attempts to gain control.

The General Staff of Ukraine's military reported one armed clash in the Kupiansk sector and listed nearly 50 attempts by Russian forces to break through Ukrainian defenses near Pokrovsk. However, Ukraine's military denies any such advance in Kupiansk. The Ukrainian official Center Against Disinformation stated that any notion of Russian forces advancing into Kupiansk is untrue and a propaganda exercise.

The Russian Defense Ministry, on the other hand, has claimed to have captured about half of Kupiansk in the region. This claim was met with scepticism, as Ukraine's 10th army corps described it as staged propaganda. The Ukrainian 10th army corps also disputed the Russian Defense Ministry's release of a drone video showing a soldier holding a Russian flag in Kupiansk, suggesting it was a manipulated image.

Reuters could not independently confirm the battlefield reports from either side. The city has suffered greatly due to the conflict, with much of it being destroyed as Moscow tries to seize it back as part of a slow advance westward along parts of the 1,000-km (620-mile) long frontline.

It is important to note that Kupiansk was initially captured by Russian troops in the early weeks of their February 2022 invasion, but Ukrainian forces later took it back. The city's continued struggle serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflict in the region.

As the situation remains fluid, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritise diplomacy and the protection of civilian lives. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
