Russia reportedly holds an advantage on the battlefront, with three times the resources, as claimed by the Ukrainian military.
In the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russian forces hold a significant advantage, with up to six times more forces and resources than their Ukrainian counterparts, according to the estimates of Oleksandre Syrsky, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces.
This numerical superiority has allowed Russia to employ the 'creeping advance' tactic, involving small infantry groups infiltrating villages and avoiding direct combat. Despite this, the progress of Russian forces has not been unchecked.
Russian forces have made progress in eastern Ukraine throughout August, according to an analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). However, the advance has been slightly slower than in previous months, with Ukrainian forces managing to retake control of 58 square kilometers and several localities.
One of the notable advancements by Russian forces occurred mid-August near the garrison town of Dobropillia, in the eastern Donetsk region. Russian forces progressed 10 kilometers before being stopped by the Ukrainian army.
Despite heavy losses and recent attempts at negotiations to end the war, Russia continues its offensive operations, aiming to gain ground and occupy approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory.
However, there have been signs of a "positive" balance sheet, according to Mr. Syrsky. The Ukrainian forces have been able to hold their ground and even push back in certain areas.
The initiation of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine was linked to efforts by US President Donald Trump in August 2022. Trump prepared for meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the conflict's resolution.
As the conflict continues, both sides remain committed to their positions, with the future of eastern Ukraine hanging in the balance. The resilience of the Ukrainian forces and the strategic maneuvers of both sides will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of this conflict.
