Russian missiles hit Sumy, resulting in over 30 casualties
In the northeastern city of Sumy, Ukraine, a tragic event unfolded during Palm Sunday, as Russian ballistic missiles struck the city, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha described the attack as a "war crime" and "absolute evil." The attack, which occurred while people were on the streets, in cars, and using public transport, left at least 21 deaths in its wake, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. Many more were injured, including at least 83 reported by the National Police, with 7 of them being children.
Images from the aftermath showed lifeless bodies on the streets, burning cars, and heavy destruction. The attack caused damage to streets, houses, a training facility, and several cars.
Sybiyha criticized Russia's refusal to agree to a US proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine on March 11. He urged Western partners to equip Ukraine with additional air defense capabilities to prevent such attacks in the future. He also called for a decisive reaction from international partners on the X platform.
In response to the attack, a crisis staff has been established, according to authorities. Sybiyha, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, condemned the attack, with Zelenskyy describing it as a terrible one.
Sybiha suggested that increased pressure on Moscow is necessary to end the attacks. He urged the international community to take action against Russia for its continued aggression against Ukraine.
As the situation continues to unfold, it is hoped that the international community will respond to these calls for action and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
