The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit is set to take place in Tianjin, China, on Sunday, August 31 to September 1, bringing together some of the world's most influential leaders.

The SCO, which was initially formed in 1996 as the "Shanghai Five" and has since expanded, includes nine member countries: China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, and Iran. The latest addition to the group is Belarus, which joined in July 2023.

The summit is expected to see the attendance of all SCO member state leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kazakh President, the Kyrgyz President, the Tajik President, the Uzbek President, the Indian Prime Minister, the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Iranian President, and the Belarusian President.

One of the key discussions at the summit is expected to be the Ukraine conflict, with Putin scheduled to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the event. Erdogan will participate in the SCO summit as part of Turkey's dialogue partner status with the organization.

The SCO represents a significant portion of the global population and economy, accounting for 40% of the world's population and 30% of the global gross domestic product. The combined territory of SCO member countries covers approximately 65% of the Eurasian continent.

In addition to the member states, over 20 heads of state and government, along with leaders from more than 10 international organizations, are expected to attend the 25th SCO summit. Mongolia and Afghanistan serve as observer states in the SCO, while India and Pakistan joined the organization at the 2017 Astana summit in Kazakhstan, and Iran joined at the 2021 Dushanbe summit in Tajikistan.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will host the "SCO Heads of State Council Meeting" for member countries and the "SCO Plus Meeting," which includes observer nations and dialogue partners. This gathering is expected to be one of the most significant diplomatic events of the year, with more than 20 world leaders in attendance.
