In a grand display of international solidarity, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un gathered at China's Victory Parade on September 3, 2022. The event, which marked the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, saw key countries such as China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and Myanmar unite, forming what analysts called an "axis of upheaval" against the West.
Putin arrived at Tiananmen Square around 8:20 local time, taking his seat to Xi's right, with Kim Jong Un to his left. The parade opened with 80 artillery salvos, representing the years since the end of World War II, and showcased new military branches established in 2024: Strategic Support Force, Cyberspace Force, Information Support Force, and Logistics Support Force.
During the parade, China displayed its nuclear triad for the first time, while 40,000 personnel from the People's Liberation Army of China marched in formation. A highlight of the event was the 28 combat helicopters that formed the number "80" in the skies above Tiananmen Square.
In a bilateral meeting at the "Donghuamen" residence, Putin and Kim Jong Un had a 2.5-hour discussion, with 1.5 hours in the presence of delegations and an additional hour in private. Putin invited Kim Jong Un for a visit to Russia after their talks. The Russian President also met with President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, stating that working with the Republic of Congo is "one of the priorities of our foreign policy in Africa."
Putin clarified that he never discussed providing security guarantees to Ukraine in exchange for territories and did not discuss this with Trump in Alaska. He also pointed out that anti-Russian sanctions are just a pretext for addressing economic issues related to certain countries.
In a press conference that lasted about 50 minutes, Putin congratulated Vietnamese President Lương Quang Minh on the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's independence and expressed that 2025 will mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He mentioned Donald Trump's request to meet with Vladimir Zelensky and expressed that he never ruled out such a meeting, even suggesting that Zelensky visit Moscow if he's ready.
Putin described the results of his visit to China and the SCO summit as "very positive." Chinese President Xi Jinping warmly welcomed Putin and Kim Jong Un, setting the stage for further discussions and potential collaborations among the world leaders.
