Russia's readiness for negotiations remains questionable, according to Zelensky's recent statement.
In a series of recent statements, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of not engaging in dialogue and instead investing in further war. This comes amidst ongoing tensions between the two nations.
Zelenskyy's remarks were prompted by Putin's continued refusal to speak with him, a stance reported by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to Lavrov, Putin questions Zelenskyy's legitimacy as President of Ukraine due to his continued rule under martial law, a concern that, under the Ukrainian constitution, extends beyond the President's term expiration.
In a recent video address, Zelenskyy reiterated this point, stating that only Russia wants war. He also mentioned Putin's visit to China, suggesting that the Russian leader is making new excuses, a sport that Zelenskyy finds familiar.
Two weeks ago, it was announced in Washington that Moscow should be ready for a meeting at the highest level "exactly today." However, there has been no new emphasis on the need for a quick end to the war in the ensuing days. In fact, Moscow has shown no willingness to engage in direct negotiations with Ukraine, a stance that Zelenskyy finds unacceptable.
It's worth noting that Putin has been ruling continuously since 2012, thanks to constitutional amendments favourable to him regarding term limits. There are no specific reports that the Ukrainian Constitutional Court has changed the term limits for President Zelenskyy due to martial law or his extended time in office because of the war.
The international community, on the other hand, has been emphasizing the need for a quick end to the war. The lack of dialogue between the two leaders raises concerns about the prospect of a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Zelenskyy's calls for dialogue are a clear indication of his desire for peace. However, without a willing counterpart in Putin, the path to resolution remains uncertain. The situation remains tense, with both sides dug in and unwilling to back down.
