Russia's summit declaration deemed a "diplomatic fiasco" by Ukraine
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, held on Monday in Tianjin, China, saw representatives from Russia, China, India, and other Asian countries come together to discuss various global issues. However, the absence of any mention of the Russia-Ukraine war in the final declaration of the summit was met with disappointment by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, who deemed it a "failure" for the Kremlin.
Meanwhile, the Volunteer Coalition, a group of countries supporting Ukraine's defense and security efforts and peace negotiations, will hold a meeting next Thursday in Paris. The coalition, which includes key European leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky participating, aims to consolidate the work done on security guarantees for Ukraine. The main guarantee being a robust Ukrainian army.
The Ukrainian government believes that the exclusion of the conflict from the SCO document was due to disagreements with Moscow on the part of China, India, and other member states. The Volunteer Coalition meeting will be held in a hybrid format, with some leaders present in Paris and others connected by videoconference.
Other measures to be discussed include the potential presence of "reinsurance forces" from coalition member states in Ukrainian territory in case a peace agreement is reached. The heads of state and government will also examine the consequences of Russia's attitude, which insists on rejecting peace.
In a separate development, the Franco-German Council of Ministers held last Friday in Toulon discussed the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, considering them a breach of his commitment to negotiate with Zelensky. Macron had anticipated the intention to request "primary and secondary sanctions" on Russia to pressure a reopening of negotiations.
The Ukrainian government recently reported a successful strike in Crimea, resulting in the destruction of Russian helicopters and a tugboat. However, there have been reports of two Russian citizens convicted of collaborating with Ukraine escaping from prison in Yekaterinburg.
Amidst this complex geopolitical landscape, the Volunteer Coalition seeks to maintain a strong stance in support of Ukraine, urging China to play a more active role in peace efforts. As the international community continues to grapple with the ongoing conflict, the focus remains on finding a peaceful resolution and securing a robust Ukrainian army to defend against any potential threats.
