Memorial Service Held for Slain Police Officer Simon Bohr in Saarbrücken

A central memorial service for Simon Bohr, the 34-year-old police officer who was tragically killed during an attempt to arrest a suspected robber, took place on Friday in Saarbrücken. The funeral service was held in an evangelical church in Saarlouis, with approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people in attendance.

The service was not open to the public, but it was broadcast in a set-up media center. Saarland's Minister President Anke Rehlinger and Interior Minister Reinhold Jost (both SPD) were among those who attended the emotional ceremony.

Police President Thorsten Weiler described the incident as one of the darkest hours for the Saarland police. The public prosecutor's office is currently investigating the incident, including for murder. The 18-year-old suspect wrested a service weapon from Simon Bohr before shooting him.

Simon Bohr was remembered as an "incredibly positive person" by Pastor Jörg Beckers. He was described as professional, reliable, and approachable by police chaplain Hubertus Kesselheim. Simon Bohr was selfless, advocating for everyone and never speaking ill of others, according to the police chaplain.

The funeral procession, which included hundreds of police officers, stretched for about 1.6 kilometers. A painted heart image was placed in front of a podium with a photo of the police officer in the sanctuary. Among other things, a trumpet solo of the Beatles song "Yesterday" was played.

Pastor Beckers stated that it's time to "let go" of Simon Bohr, but the outpouring of sympathy for his family may provide some comfort. Flowers are constantly laid at the scene of the crime, and children bring self-made pictures and toys.

Simon Bohr left behind a wife and two children. The speaker of the central memorial ceremony planned for Friday in Saarbrücken is the police president Thorsten Weiler. The funeral service was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers and the impact they have on their communities.
