Safaricom's Gaming Conference Unlocks Africa's Digital Future

Safaricom's Chief Consumer Business Officer, Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, has been driving the telco's consumer business and initiatives, including games. Recently, Safaricom hosted its first-ever Gaming Conference in Nairobi, highlighting the continent's digital future and the role of games in shaping it.

The conference, themed 'Level Up Africa: Unlocking Games Potential in Africa', gathered gamers, developers, influencers, investors, and pop culture fans. It showcased the determination of African gamers like Brian (theeBeast) and Shirley, who shared their experiences in the continent's esports scene.

Ali-Kimanthi, who assumed her role at Safaricom without a specified date, emphasized that games are about more than just play. She sees them as a platform for talent, creativity, and opportunity. Safaricom's involvement in games extends beyond sponsorship. The company aims to build an ecosystem, funding startups and supporting creators through initiatives like the Spark Accelerator. It has previously partnered with Pro Series Gaming and Games Lounge for tournaments such as the MobiPlay Challenge and Wai Ndai Challenge. The conference also addressed crucial issues like policy updates, gamer protections, and preventing global platforms from abandoning the region.

With Safaricom leading the charge, African games and esports may have reached a turning point. The telco's recent powering of the 2025 Otamatsuri Gaming Convention with its 5G network and the hosting of the Gaming Conference signal that games are no longer on the margins in Africa. Safaricom is positioned to empower developers and elevate African stories through games, shaping the continent's digital future.
