Safeguarding Your PC from Invalid Windows 11 Updates: Methods Including Restore Points, Quick System Recovery, and Comprehensive Backups
Windows 11 users can now check the release health dashboard to stay informed about known issues and update blocks. This transparency aims to provide a smoother experience for users during updates.
One of the key features of Windows 11 is the "Backup and Restore" option, which allows for daily automatic backups of the operating system and files. This feature ensures that your data is protected in case of any unexpected issues.
However, it's essential to exercise caution when dealing with updates. Restarting the computer might recover the drive, but it could also potentially cause data corruption and loss. Therefore, it's always advisable to save your work and back up your data before updating.
If a recent update is causing problems, users have the option to uninstall it from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) by following specific steps. This can be a lifesaver if a cumulative update is known to cause issues and access to the desktop is available.
Microsoft is currently collecting customer feedback to determine if there's a real fault in the operating system. Recently, the August 2025 Security Update (KB5063878) caused storage issues on Windows 11 version 24H2, leading to Solid State Drives (SSDs) or Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) disappearing. However, Phison, a manufacturer of SSD controllers, was unable to reproduce the reported SSD issue after more than 4,500 hours of testing.
To temporarily disable automatic updates on Windows 11, the "Pause for 1 week" button can be clicked within the "Windows Update" settings. For permanent disabling, the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy in the Local Group Policy Editor should be set to "Disabled."
Microsoft makes monthly System updates mandatory on Windows 11. It's recommended to complement the recovery plan with a file backup using services like OneDrive or third-party tools. A system repair disc is not necessary when creating a full backup using the System Image backup tool.
An Out-of-band (OOB) update was released for versions 23H2 and 22H2 to address a critical bug causing problems with the reset and recovery features. Delaying the update for at least two weeks or until the release is confirmed safe for the computer is advised.
Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) is a feature on Windows 11 that restores the computer from a critical boot failure quickly. It has been available since the August 2025 Security Update on version 24H2 and higher releases. In the Home edition, QMR comes enabled by default, but it must be enabled manually in the "Pro" edition.
Lastly, System Restore is a feature on Windows 11 that creates snapshots of the computer’s working state and saves them as "restore points." It can be used to undo system changes, including removing a recent update, without affecting files. However, System Restore must be enabled manually and a restore point created before installing a cumulative update to have a way to undo changes after installing a buggy update.
