The members of the sailing club are just as accustomed to maintaining a lawn mower as they are a sailboat. They also manage the upkeep of the Hanseatic city's canal rest area.

Demmin Sailing Club: A Vibrant Community of Water Sports Enthusiasts

The Demmin Sailing Club, nestled on the banks of the old arm of the Peene, is a hub of activity for sailing enthusiasts in the region. With a fleet of 26 sailing boats and 5 motorboats, the club offers a variety of water activities for its members.

Recently, the club underwent renovations that extended beyond expectations. The toilets, showers, washroom, and tea kitchen were only recently made usable again, but the wait was worth it. The renovations also included extensive work on the waterway rest area, with repairs to mooring facilities, a redesign of outdoor areas, and the construction of a new social building.

The club's calendar is filled with exciting events. General meetings are held every spring and autumn, and the Whitsun meeting is an annual highlight. This event includes a race on the Kummerower See, attracting sailors from the Malchin club and other neighbouring clubs, as well as individual sportspeople. The traditional boat parade to the Peenefest and the regatta for the blue ribbon are further highlights of the Whitsun meeting.

Members of the Demmin Sailing Club often embark on weekend tours to the Kummerower See and the Peene, and vacation trips to the Baltic Sea waters off the island of Rügen, as well as to Poland, Denmark, and Sweden. The club's spirit of adventure is evident in these travels.

One of the club's proud achievements is the increase in guest numbers since 1998, with 1635 guests per year. However, guest care could not take place last year due to the new sanitary building, but there is high interest from water sports enthusiasts in the region this year.

The club's history is deeply rooted, with some members having built their boats during the DDR era, modernized, and rebuilt them. One such member, Roland Techow, began sailing at the age of ten and particularly remembers being part of the crew of the traditional sailer Victoria.

The club's chairman, Norbert Giese, states that for every seven hours of work, there is one hour of sailing. Club members provide all services, including harbor duty and lawn care, on a voluntary basis. Winter club activities include a bowling night followed by a cosy get-together.

Notable members include Christiane Petzold, who is proud of the increase in guest numbers, and Karin and Karl-Heinz Diers, who are currently representing the club and the Hansa city on a world cruise. Silvia Giese, the wife of Norbert Giese, states that she follows instructions during boat trips.

The Demmin Sailing Club is a close-knit community, with 46 members, including 10 women, and they each have their own boat. The opening sail in May goes as far as the Klenzer Bridge and is followed by a joint coffee table, particularly popular among older members. A barbecue by the Easter fire is held at the club during Easter.

Despite the challenges faced, the Demmin Sailing Club continues to thrive, offering a unique blend of camaraderie, adventure, and a love for the water. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just starting out, the Demmin Sailing Club welcomes you with open arms.
