Los Angeles County's Pathway Home Operation Expands to Help Homeless Residents

In a collaborative effort to combat homelessness, Los Angeles County has launched the latest instance of its Pathway Home operation in various locations. The initiative, which includes the LA County Homeless Initiative, LAHSA, the LA County Sheriff's Department, the City of Santa Fe Springs, and the LA County Department of Public Works, aims to provide immediate interim housing solutions and ultimately end homelessness for those in need.

The operation, funded by a $51.5 million state grant awarded to Los Angeles County earlier this year, aims to expand the Pathway Home program and help nearly 600 people living in encampments along the 105 freeway and nearby riverbeds access housing and services.

On December 19, 2024, 30 people living along the San Gabriel River and the 605 Freeway in Santa Fe Springs were moved into interim housing as part of the LA County "Pathway Home" operation. All 30 unhoused individuals were moved into 25 rooms in a local motel master-leased by the County.

Supervisor Janice Hahn, who oversees the cities within her district that will receive a total of $12.2 million in 2025 for solutions to homelessness, stated that encampments are communities and people are more likely to accept help and housing if they know their entire encampment is accepting help together.

Outreach teams for the Pathway Home operation develop trusting relationships with people at encampments to help them move inside. This approach has been successful in various locations, including unincorporated Lennox, where on August 16, 2023, Los Angeles County launched a "major expansion" of its Pathway Home operation, helping 59 people move inside.

The City of Santa Fe Springs has extended its gratitude to Los Angeles County and Supervisor Janice Hahn for bringing the Pathway Home Program to their community. Santa Fe Springs Mayor Bill Rounds expressed gratitude for the Pathway Home Program, stating it restores dignity, hope, and opportunity for the unhoused.

The Pathway Home operation is not just about providing shelter, but also about offering immediate interim housing solutions such as motel rooms. This approach has been effective in bringing entire encampments inside at once, as seen in the latest Pathway Home operation in unincorporated Lennox and the previous operation in Santa Fe Springs.

As the 2025 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count revealed, the number of people experiencing homelessness across Los Angeles County has declined for the second year in a row. The Pathway Home operation is a significant step towards ending homelessness in Los Angeles County and providing a brighter future for those in need.
