SAP aims to elevate data sovereignty through innovative 'on-premises' infrastructure solutions

SAP, a leading software company, has announced a new "On-Site" solution for its sovereign cloud offering. This innovative solution aims to offer flexible sovereignty models for organizations operating across various industries, particularly beneficial for governments and businesses in regulated sectors.

The expansion of the sovereign cloud offering is in response to growing calls for heightened data sovereignty controls, driven by stringent regulatory requirements in Europe and concerns over data privacy. The On-Site solution offers "operational sovereignty" and "technical sovereignty", redefining what sovereignty means for customers.

SAP's President of the Sovereign Cloud Division, Martin Merz, stated that the On-Site solution provides the "ultimate level of physical control and data residency". This means that customers can manage their environments with SAP resources and run SAP workloads using deployment options based on their individual needs. The solution allows customers to host managed cloud infrastructure within their own facilities.

Industry heavyweights like Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, and Oracle have also launched dedicated sovereign cloud services for European customers, reflecting the growing importance of data sovereignty in the region.

The Trump administration's 2025 memorandum pledging to defend American tech companies from "overseas extortion" has further fueled the demand for sovereign cloud services. Microsoft President Brad Smith stated that the company would resort to legal action to protect EU customers from US demands to shut down services.

SAP's Regional President for its Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) operations, Augusta Spinelli, will lead SAP’s business in this key region. The company's sovereign cloud initiative focuses on a series of "core capabilities", with a strong emphasis on data sovereignty.

SAP offers varied deployment options, including SAP-hosted infrastructure, hyperscaler-based models, and customer-site hosted options. The On-Site solution, however, offers unmatched control, compliance, and operational assurance without compromising innovation.

As sovereign cloud services become the "bare minimum" expected from European customers, SAP's On-Site solution is poised to play a significant role in addressing the growing demand for data sovereignty in the region.
