Saudi Arabia's AlUla megaproject brings the kingdom into global tourism focus
In the heart of Saudi Arabia, a remarkable transformation is underway in the ancient city of AlUla. This historic site, steeped in rich history and culture, is being meticulously restored and reimagined as a modern-day destination for art, culture, and luxury.
One of the most anticipated additions to AlUla is Dar Tantora, a luxury boutique hotel that will be part of the site's restoration project. The hotel, nestled amidst the desert landscape, promises to offer a unique blend of tradition and modernity.
The burgeoning art scene in AlUla is centred around the pedestrian-friendly AlJadidah Arts District. This vibrant hub is set to become a focal point for art enthusiasts, with a permanent destination for contemporary art being established in the nearby Wadi AlFann, a 65 sq km desert area.
Wadi AlFann will also be home to large-scale, permanent commissions by five land art pioneers: James Turrell, Manal AlDowayan, Agnes Denes, Michael Heizer, and Ahmed Mater. These impressive works are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
New hotels are also set to grace the AlUla landscape. Notable among these are projects from the Aman Group, Six Senses, and the Jean Nouvel-designed Sharaan Nature Resort, which will feature 40 suites, pavilions, and villas carved into sandstone mountains.
Architects Asif Khan and Lina Ghotmeh are among those contributing to the AlUla developments. Ghotmeh, known for her approach that integrates history, nature, and sustainability in design, aligns well with the vision for AlUla. Her studio's philosophy, termed "Archaeology of the Future," emphasizes a connection between architecture and cultural context.
The AlUla Arts Festival, an annual event, has already showcased Saudi talent through exhibitions, workshops, installations, and live music. The fourth iteration of this event has recently concluded, leaving art lovers eagerly awaiting the next instalment.
As AlUla continues to evolve, it promises to become a must-visit destination for those seeking a unique blend of culture, history, and luxury. The transformation of this ancient city is not just a journey into the past, but also a glimpse into the future of Saudi Arabia's cultural landscape.
