Saudi Crown Prince and French President Confer on Tense Palestine Predicament

In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, tensions have reached a boiling point. The International Association of Genocide Scholars has declared that Israel's actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide, a shocking assertion that has sparked global concern.

The latest war between Israel and Palestine began in October 2023, resulting in over 1,200 deaths, mostly civilians, according to health officials and rights groups. Israel has been accused of starving the Gaza population as a weapon of war, a claim that has added fuel to the international outcry.

Amidst this turmoil, Israel has threatened to take over Gaza City and annex the West Bank if Western nations follow through with promises of recognizing a Palestinian state. This threat has only served to intensify the international pressure on Israel.

Notably, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia has reiterated his country's position for an immediate end to Israel's war on Gaza and the Occupied Territories. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and France's President Emmanuel Macron held discussions on the situation in Palestine, with Saudi Arabia and France leading an initiative to recognize a Palestinian state.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry commended France's decision to recognize Palestine, reaffirming the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and independent state. This move was followed by Australia, Belgium, Canada, Malta, Portugal, and the UK, who have all promised to recognize Palestine this month.

In an attempt to resolve the conflict, the US President Donald Trump held a meeting at the White House last week to discuss the situation. However, Trump's vision for the Palestinian territory is controversial, with him announcing in February that he wants it to be turned into what he calls the "Riviera of the Middle East."

Trump's Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and former adviser, and a top Israeli official were present at the meeting. Yet, their discussions have not seemed to quell the international pressure on Israel.

In a significant move, France announced it would formally recognize Palestine during the UN General Assembly later this month. This recognition, along with the growing number of countries pledging to recognize Palestine, has strengthened the call for a two-state solution to the conflict.

Israel's government has vowed to eradicate the group Hamas and free their citizens. However, the crown prince has condemned any measures aimed at undermining a two-state solution to the situation.

As the conflict continues, around 250 people have been captured, and the fate of Gaza's 2 million people remains uncertain. A 38-page prospectus circulating within the Trump administration envisions the relocation of all of Gaza's people, a proposal that has sparked further controversy and concern.

The US wants to take over the enclave for 10 years while it is transformed into a tourist resort and tech hub. Whether this vision will become a reality remains to be seen, as the international community continues to call for peace and a resolution to the conflict that respects the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians.
