Scandal in ski jumping: prohibition imposed on Norwegian competitors

The International Ski Federation (FIS) and its Ethics Commission (FEC) have handed down a three-month ban to World Champion Marius Lindvik and team Olympic champion Johann André Forfang, along with fines of 2000 Swiss francs each, for manipulating their competition outfits.

The scandal, which overshadowed the title fights at the end of February and the beginning of March, came to light through anonymously filmed and published videos showing the Norwegian team tampering with competition outfits in an unauthorized manner.

Lindvik, who won gold on the normal hill ahead of Andreas Wellinger at the World Championships, and Forfang, who also won medals with the team and the mixed team, have accepted the sanctions imposed. Both athletes have acknowledged that they should have checked and asked questions about the nocturnal adjustments to their outfits, but are not accused of knowing about the manipulations.

No retroactive disqualification is planned for Lindvik's wins, including the normal hill event at the World Championships, nor for Wellinger's second-place finish. This means that the World Championships results remain unchanged.

The verdict against the coaches Magnus Brevig and two assistants is still pending. The already served suspension period of around three weeks will be deducted from the potential three-month ban for the coaches.

The independent ethics office interviewed 38 witnesses and examined 88 pieces of evidence during investigations. The FIS has not disclosed the names of the three coaches against whom a judgment from the FIS Ethics Committee is still pending.

This is not the first time that the Norwegian ski jumping team has been embroiled in controversy. In 2018, the team was accused of using a banned substance, but were later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Despite the scandal, the Norwegian team has continued to dominate the ski jumping world, with Lindvik and Forfang leading the charge. The team will now have to face the consequences of their actions and work to rebuild their reputation in the sport.
