With the new school year just around the corner, it's essential to prioritise the safety and health of our children. Here are some important reminders and recommendations to help ensure a smooth transition back to the classroom.

The State Data Protection Officer has issued a warning about the sharing of school start photos on social media platforms. Photos should only be shared in private environments and should never include children or adults who have not given their consent, or the consent of their guardians.

As children return to school, it's crucial to be mindful of potential health risks. Particularly, educators should emphasise the importance of hand hygiene to prevent EHEC infections. These infections can lead to severe illness, especially in children, and have been on the rise in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with 45 cases detected since mid-August.

To combat EHEC infections, the Education Minister, Oldenburg, has published recommendations for institutions. These include promoting regular hand washing, washing or peeling vegetables, and ensuring that children do not put their fingers in their mouths or eat with unwashed hands after petting animals.

In addition to health concerns, road safety is another critical aspect of back-to-school preparations. On Monday, various organisations, including the Deutsche Verkehrswacht (German Traffic Watch) and local authorities, will be involved in improving road safety for children. Traffic education projects, practical teaching materials for children and schools, and initiatives like "Safe to School" and school crossing guards will all play a part in promoting safe travel to and from school.

Measures like the "walking bus" are also being implemented to promote pedestrian safety, child independence, and help alleviate school traffic congestion. By working together to prioritise the safety and health of our children, we can ensure a successful start to the new school year.
