School Commences in NRW: Police Provide Guidelines for Secure Schools
As the city of Dortmund and Lünen kick off a new school year, the Dortmund Police are urging parents, road users, and pedestrians to contribute to student safety. The focus is on ensuring a secure environment for children navigating their school routes, whether they walk, cycle, or use public transportation.
The traffic puppet theater, a unique initiative by the Dortmund Police, is aimed at kindergarten groups and elementary school classes. Held in Westfalenpark, the theater educates children about road safety in a playful and emotional way.
Bikes should be in good technical condition for safety reasons, and wearing a helmet is strongly advised. Pedestrians, especially children, are encouraged to wear bright, reflective clothing or bags to increase visibility.
Particular attention is required around bus stops, as children may suddenly step out between buses. It's crucial to exercise caution and be mindful of the potential risks.
Unfortunately, in the past, school route accidents have occurred in Dortmund and Lünen. In 2023, six children were injured, and in 2024, the number rose to five. These incidents highlight the importance of traffic safety education and the need for vigilance.
"Drop-off and pick-up" traffic by car regularly creates dangerous situations, especially around elementary schools. To mitigate these risks, parents are encouraged to avoid using cars whenever possible.
Adults, including parents, significantly influence traffic safety as children often imitate their behaviour. By setting good examples, such as wearing helmets, following traffic rules, and being aware of their surroundings, adults can contribute to a safer environment for all.
The Dortmund Police are prioritizing the safety of students during their school journey. They remind everyone that factors contributing to traffic accidents can include weather, season, local conditions, and improper behaviour by drivers and pedestrians.
