School session continues following knife assault incident

In the city of Essen, Germany, the Essen vocational college has reopened its doors following a tragic stabbing incident that occurred last week. The school community is taking steps to ensure the safety of its students and staff, as the investigation into the incident continues.

The suspect, a 17-year-old Kosovar, is currently receiving treatment in intensive care. The individual was apprehended in a park near the main train station, after a confrontation during which police were forced to use firearms. No further details about the motive for the crime have been released yet, as the murder commission is diligently working to uncover the reasons behind the attack.

Special units were quick to secure the school building immediately after the attack, and the presence of security personnel on the premises will be increased for enhanced safety. However, it should be noted that they are not authorized to search school bags to check for weapons. Parents are being urged by Essen's Mayor, Thomas Kufen (CDU), to check their children's school bags for any suspicious items.

The SPD interior expert, Christina Kampmann, has requested a discussion in the Interior Committee of the NRW state parliament due to the incident. She stated that an act like this cannot remain without consequences. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) will be asked to provide an initial report and analysis about the incident at the interior committee meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday.

The teacher involved in the incident, aged 45, was seriously injured but is no longer in critical condition. Lessons may be adapted by teachers to accommodate the current situation, and school psychologists will be available on-site to offer support to students and staff.

The city spokesperson has advised the school community to inform teachers if they hear a child boasting about having a knife at school. Approximately 1,800 students will attend classes as planned, with lessons resuming as normal.

As the investigation continues, the school and the city of Essen are working together to ensure the safety and well-being of its students and staff. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
