Schooling in Romania commences in September, structured across five academic modules and interspersed with five periods of vacation.

The upcoming 2025-2026 school year in Romania is shrouded in uncertainty, as trade unions in the education sector have announced a boycott of the beginning of the school year. Protests have been ongoing due to cost-cutting measures in the state apparatus, which union officials argue undermine teachers' working conditions and the quality of education.

Despite the ongoing protests, specific information about which unions are striking or boycotting the start of the school year is yet to be found in the search results. However, Marius Nistor, the president of the Spiru Haret Federation, has stated that there is no question of a general strike in education, but only of a boycott on September 8.

The school year is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 8, 2025, and end on Friday, June 19, 2026. It will be divided into five modules, separated by five vacations. The school year for 8th grade will have a duration of 35 weeks of courses and will end on June 12, 2026. High school classes (technological branch) will have a school year duration of 37 weeks of courses and will end on June 26, 2026.

The Ministry of Education has plans to increase the time spent teaching for each teacher, merge schools with few children, and slash scholarships. These measures have added to the concerns of the education unions.

During the school year, several national evaluations and simulations will take place. The Mathematics national evaluation simulation will take place on March 17, 2026, followed by the Romanian Language and Literature national evaluation simulation on March 16, 2026. The Baccalaureate Simulation for the Compulsory subject of the profile will take place on March 24, 2026, and the Baccalaureate Simulation for Romanian Language and Literature will take place on March 23, 2026. The Baccalaureate Simulation for the Elective subject of the profile and specialization will take place on March 25, 2026.

Vacations will occur on the following dates: October 25, 2025, to November 2, 2025; December 20, 2025, to January 7, 2026; February (one week, at the decision of the county school inspectorates/Bucharest municipality, in the period February 9 - March 1, 2026); April 4, 2026, to April 14, 2026; and June 20, 2026, to September 6, 2026. The spring vacation in April will include both Orthodox Easter (April 12, 2026) and Catholic Easter (April 5, 2026).

In addition to the school year, the national program "A Different School" and the "Green Week" program will take place between September 8, 2025, and April 3, 2026. The assessment of digital skills will take place from June 15-17, 2026.

Marius Nistor also mentioned that there will be other actions being considered at the national level from September 9 onward. As the start of the school year approaches, the situation remains uncertain, with protests and boycotts continuing, and the Ministry of Education working to address the concerns of the education unions.
