In the world of German basketball, the upcoming summer promises to be a significant one, with key figures like Daniel Theis set to play a pivotal role. The 33-year-old centre, who has a history of injuries, has been a mainstay in the national team for years, and his presence is more important than ever.

Former national player Per Günther, now a TV expert for MagentaSport, has stated that Theis is indispensable for the team, given the many question marks within the squad. Theis, along with Dennis Schröder, is considered one of the best duos in Germany over the past ten years.

However, Theis's fitness is a concern. He missed some games during the national team's preparation due to knee problems, and his upcoming games against Spain will serve as a stress test for his body. Theis left the NBA veteran team Boston Celtics this winter and is currently active in the 2024-25 season with the team, but he has since moved to AS Monaco, where he has encountered more knee issues.

The German team is facing a challenging situation, with head coach Alex Mumbru managing a squad that is dealing with multiple injuries, ailments, and illnesses. Key players like Moritz Wagner and NBA champion Isaiah Hartenstein are missing due to injuries, leaving a void that Theis could potentially fill.

The next generation of German basketball, led by NBA youngsters Ariel Hukporti and Tristan da Silva, is ready to step up. Orlando pro Tristan da Silva is expected to play a bigger role this summer, while Per Günther and Daniel Theis once played together in Ulm.

Despite the praise for Theis, Dennis Schröder questioned the geographical scope of the praise, asking if it was only limited to Germany. Schröder, who has expressed a desire to play with Theis in the NBA in the future, believes the centre is more than just a key figure for the German team—he's a game-changer.

The medal chances for the German team are significantly affected if Theis isn't fit. With no major tournament in 2026, this summer could be Daniel Theis's last major tournament with the national team. As he prepares to potentially hang up his international boots, the focus is on Theis's recovery and his readiness to lead the team to success.
