Scientists in Krasnoyarsk have detected fluid from golden ore deposits
Reborn in the Bowels of the Earth: The Gold-rich Mysteries of Konduyak Revealed
Scientists from the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy named after V.S. Soberalev at the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk) and the Siberian Federal University in Krasnoyarsk have taken a deep dive into the hidden secrets of the Konduyak gold deposit in the Krasnoyarsk region. Their exploration sheds light on the complex processes that lead to the formation of these elusive gold-rich areas.
These scientists, led by Dr. Yelena Shaparenko, have delved into the enigmatic world of fluids, minuscule pockets of liquid and gas that are trapped within minerals, forming as they develop. The chemical composition of these fluids can offer invaluable insights into the conditions under which these precious metal deposits were created: the temperature, pressure, and the oxidizing-reducing environment.
Yet, the precise ways in which the various components within these fluids contribute to gold deposition and the factors promoting the formation of extensive gold deposits remain unclear, despite the importance of this knowledge in both theoretical and practical terms. A deeper understanding of these phenomena could pave the way for more accurate methods to locate new sources of precious metals.
For their study, Shaparenko and her team collected ten samples from the Konduyak gold deposit and analyzed them using advanced techniques. One such method, Raman spectroscopy, allows researchers to determine the main components of the fluids. Through their analysis, they discovered that the fluids primarily consist of water, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen.
For a more detailed examination, they employed gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, a highly sensitive method that separates the components of a mixture according to their chemical properties. By employing this approach, they were able to identify between 232 and 302 unique compounds in each sample, in addition to water and carbon dioxide. Other components they found included various hydrocarbons, sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds.
"Previous research has demonstrated that these substances play a pivotal role in the transport and deposition of gold, as they can form complexes with this metal, facilitating its migration through rock formations. As conditions change—for example, temperature or pressure—these complexes break apart, leading to the precipitation and accumulation of gold, eventually forming substantial deposits," explains Shaparenko.
The researchers also found that the fluids at the Konduyak deposit share chemical similarities with other gold deposits in the Krasnoyarsk region. This suggests that the formation of gold deposits in the region may be part of a broader, unified mineral-rich system.
As geologists continue to unravel the intricate secrets buried deep within the Earth, valuable resources like gold are waiting to be discovered. By improving our understanding of the fluids responsible for mineral formation, researchers can help expand Russia's mineral resource base. In the future, Shaparenko and her team aim to gather data from over ten gold deposits in the Yenisei Ridge and formulate a comprehensive model for the fluid dynamic processes that govern the formation of the vast Yenisei gold-bearing province.
