In the summer of 2025, Germany experienced a unique weather pattern, with some regions experiencing warmer temperatures than others. Rhineland-Palatinate, for instance, had a warmer summer compared to the long-term average, but it didn't break any record temperatures.

The summer was significantly sunnier than the average, with Rhineland-Palatinate recording more than 30% above the average of 595 hours of sunshine. However, the sunshine was not consistent throughout the season. July 2025 saw rainfall, but August remained dry for weeks, leading to a dry spell.

The dry spell was short-lived, as the weather became scarce, with cool and wet conditions just in time for the summer holidays. The total summer rainfall in 2025 was 196 liters per square meter, lower than the reference period's 218 liters.

Meanwhile, Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, and the Saarland had warmer summers than Rhineland-Palatinate. The Saarland, in particular, stood out, with an average summer temperature of 19.3 degrees and the summer of 2025 ranking among the ten warmest since 1881.

Andernach, a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, recorded a nationwide summer high of 39.3 degrees on July 2nd. In August, another heatwave hit Rhineland-Palatinate, with temperatures well above 30 degrees for several days in a row.

The meteorological division of seasons was established in the 19th century to facilitate the comparison of climate data. According to this division, the summer ends on August 31st, and the meteorological autumn begins on the 1st of each month. However, astronomical or calendar autumn begins on September 22nd.

It's worth noting that the first heatwave of the summer occurred as early as late June. The international reference period (1961 to 1990) had a significantly lower average summer temperature in Rhineland-Palatinate of 16.3 degrees.

Meteorologists did not provide specific information about their predictions about the end of the summer in 2025. Nevertheless, the summer of 2025 will undoubtedly remain a topic of discussion among weather enthusiasts for years to come.
