Scores of Abitur 2025 - The typical marks obtained by candidates
In the upcoming winter semester, universities in Baden-Württemberg will continue to prioritise Abitur performance or other qualifying criteria for admission, with only half of the university programs open to first-year students regardless of their Abitur grade.
According to the Center for Higher Education Development in Gütersloh, over 43,000 young people are expected to graduate with their Abitur in Baden-Württemberg this year. This includes approximately 29,000 students from general education gymnasiums, around 14,000 from vocational gymnasiums, and around 330 from community schools.
The average Abitur grade for students from general education gymnasiums in Baden-Württemberg stands at 2.2 for this year, consistent with the previous year's average of 2.23. Similarly, students from vocational gymnasiums and community schools have also maintained their respective previous year's averages, with vocational gymnasium students averaging a grade of 2.4, and community school students averaging 2.4.
The Center for Higher Education Development has analysed university programs in Baden-Württemberg for the upcoming winter semester. The analysis reveals that the proportion of study programs with access restrictions is particularly high in law, economics, social, and cultural sciences, with 51.6 percent of such programs imposing restrictions. In contrast, the proportion is relatively low in language and cultural sciences, with only 23.1 percent of programs imposing restrictions.
Access restrictions, such as a numerus clausus or an application process, apply to 50.2 percent of the study programs. This means that a significant number of programs still place a high emphasis on Abitur grades for admission.
The Secretariat of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in Berlin will publish more data on the Abitur 2025, including the number of students who received a perfect score. Comparative data with other federal states regarding Abitur grades will also be available at a later date.
Despite the availability of programs open to first-year students regardless of their Abitur grade, the Abitur grade remains crucial for gaining admission to a university. The average Abitur grade for students from general education gymnasiums is lower than that of students from vocational gymnasiums and community schools, indicating a higher level of academic performance in the latter groups.
More data on the Abitur 2025, including the number of students who received a perfect score, will be published at a later date.
