Hürth Municipal Utilities GmbH to Renovate 50-Year-Old Retaining Wall Along Villering

Starting in early August, Hürth Municipal Utilities GmbH (HMG) will embark on a comprehensive renovation of a 50-year-old reinforced concrete retaining wall along the Villering in Hermülheim district.

The existing retaining wall, located between the elevated Hürth-Park shopping center and the lower-lying residential settlement, exhibits significant damage, including cracks, concrete spalling, exposed and corroded reinforcement, and damaged joint material. As a result, the existing header beam of the retaining wall will be completely dismantled during the renovation. Stair and ramp facilities on the retaining wall will also be removed.

To ensure pedestrian access to the Villering, a continuous sidewalk will be available throughout the construction period. Pedestrian traffic will be temporarily redirected via the Berliner Platz from the start of the planned closure.

The construction site will be enclosed with foil-covered scaffolding to protect the surroundings and comply with safety regulations. Unfortunately, public parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of the closure will temporarily not be available.

Residents can place their trash cans at the curb for collection as usual. The contracted construction company will transport the cans to designated collection points and return them subsequently. It is recommended to clearly mark the cans with the respective house number for easy identification.

On the Villering side, trellises will be installed and subsequently planted with new vegetation. On the Spijkenisser Straße side, the existing paved surface will be replaced with a lawn. In addition to the concrete renovation, adjacent exterior facilities will be comprehensively redesigned.

Access to private properties will not be affected by the construction measures. The Spijkenisser Straße will remain open to vehicle traffic during the entire construction period.

During the demolition work on the ramps and stairs, the Villering between Berliner Platz and Schwarzer Weg will be fully closed to traffic for approximately 2 to 3 weeks starting on August 4, 2025. Afterwards, the Villering will remain open to one-way traffic.

Bus lines running through the construction area will not be affected by the construction work, with no detours necessary. The completion of the entire measure is scheduled for the turn of the year.
