Season of gathering in Michaelsberg gardens

The historic orchards within the St. Michael Monastery complex in Bamberg, a sprawling garden area that includes the Benedictine Way from Aufseßstraße, the baroque terraced gardens, the Reuthersberg, the former Propstei St. Getreu, and the Ottobrunnen, have been the target of unauthorised fruit theft and tree damage.

The Citizens' Hospital Foundation Bamberg, the owners of the St. Michael Monastery and the surrounding orchards, have been facing this issue for some time. However, the foundation's address remains undisclosed in search results, making it difficult for the public to report such incidents.

Despite these challenges, the foundation has been diligent in maintaining the health of the apple trees. For years, they have entrusted the care, pruning, and harvesting of the trees to the employees of Lebenshilfe Bamberg e.V.

The harvested fruits are destined for various popular products, including apple cider, apple and pear juice, liqueurs, brands, and jams. To ensure the right level of ripeness for the brands and liqueurs, apples, pears, and quinces are sometimes left on the trees longer.

Visitors to the monastery complex are asked to help protect the plants and trees by staying on the designated paths. The historic orchards are protected landscape components according to the Federal Nature Conservation Act, and any damage inflicted upon them is a serious matter.

In response to the increased incidents of theft and damage, the foundation has commissioned a security service to monitor the complex. Additionally, surveillance will be intensified during the upcoming harvest weeks, when the "Bamberg Stiftsgarten" will begin its apple harvest.

Any cases of fruit theft and vandalism will be reported by the Citizens' Hospital Foundation Bamberg. The foundation needs the entire apple harvest from the historic orchards each year to produce and sell these popular products.

The foundation urges the public to help in preserving this valuable historical and natural resource by respecting the gardens and reporting any suspicious activities.
