Rebuilding the Vehicle Shed at Wuppertal's Vohwinkel Station: A Step Towards Modern, Sustainable Public Transport
Discussions on funding for the subsequent implementation phase of the vehicle shed rebuilding project at Wuppertal's Vohwinkel station are currently ongoing. The project aims to modernise the local public transport system, with the new facility providing increased space for vehicle parking and a modern workshop for maintenance and upkeep.
The need for funding has been highlighted by Christian Kindinger, CEO of WSW, who submitted funding applications for the construction of the new vehicle halls in Wuppertal. The applications for planning subsidies have already been made to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and financing discussions for the implementation phase are ongoing with the state.
The existing vehicle shed, over 120 years old, is structurally unsound to accommodate future suspension railway operations. WSW aims to strengthen its position as a reliable partner in communal mobility and underscore its commitment to a high-performance, reliable, and climate-friendly local public transport in Wuppertal with the new construction.
Sabine Schnake, WSW-mobil Managing Director, emphasizes the central role of politics in public passenger transport, as it creates the framework conditions for buses, trains, and other means of transport to operate. She also underlined the importance of funding for the implementation of modern, sustainable standards to secure the future of the suspension railway.
The "eezy.nrw" ticket, a digital ticket for public local transport in North Rhine-Westphalia, will also be valid in buses, trains, and the suspension railway. This ticket operates on a principle of checking in via the app before starting your journey and checking out upon exiting, with the fare calculated based on a fixed base price and the straight-line kilometers between the start and end points.
On September 1, 2025, a visit was made to Vohwinkel station by the State Secretary, WSW CEO Markus Hilkenbach, WSW-mobil Managing Director Sabine Schnake, VRR Chairman Oliver Wittke, and Wuppertal's Mayor Uwe Schneidewind. The tour provided insights into the maintenance and upkeep of the suspension railway vehicles, and the historic imperial carriage, currently being prepared for reintroduction, was a point of interest during the visit.
Christian Hirte, in attendance, stated that the coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD aims to ensure growth, prosperity, and a capable, resilient state, which includes a functional infrastructure and all forms of mobility. He expressed interest in the plans to rebuild the vehicle shed.
In conclusion, the rebuilding of the vehicle shed at Vohwinkel station is a significant step towards modernising and enhancing the local public transport system in Wuppertal. The project underscores WSW's commitment to providing a high-performance, reliable, and climate-friendly transport service for the community.
