Secretly-captured footage reveals women discarding a box filled with cats at a shelter in Antioch past closing time.
In Antioch, a heartbreaking incident occurred when two women abandoned a crate full of cats in front of the local animal shelter after hours, leaving the animals to fend for themselves.
The incident took place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, after everyone at Antioch Animal Services had gone home for the day. The crate, which contained five cats, was discovered empty in the morning. Four of the cats have since been found, but one remains missing.
Antioch Animal Services is now asking for the community's help in identifying the women in the video footage that captured the abandonment. If you have any information, please contact Antioch Animal Services or email [email protected].
Kathey Cabrera, president of K911 Animal Rescue in Antioch, expressed her heartbreak over the incident. "It's always disheartening to see more abandoned animals," she said. She also empathized with the suspects, believing they may have felt they had no other option.
Cabrera encourages everyone to spay and neuter their animals to help control the number of unwanted pets. She explained that the cost of spaying and neutering may be contributing to the number of animals being abandoned.
The system at Antioch Animal Services is currently overwhelmed due to a high number of animals and fewer adoptions post-COVID-19. The shelter is only accommodating sick or injured cats due to being full.
Surveillance cameras captured the abandoned cats facing difficult conditions, including raccoons, wildlife, feral cats, and activated sprinklers. This is a stark reminder of the dangers abandoned animals face when left to fend for themselves.
Antioch Animal Services wants to remind the public that abandonment is against the law. They urge everyone to exhaust all options before surrendering an animal and to make an appointment to do so.
Making an appointment is crucial to ensure the animal's health and safety. By doing so, the shelter can provide the necessary care and find the animal a loving home.
Cabrera expresses her hope that the remaining cat will be found soon and that the suspects will be identified. She encourages everyone to do their part in helping animals in need.
