Senator in charge of transportation expresses a wish to resolve any lingering queries concerning time constraints.
In a Senate meeting on Tuesday, Ute Schneider, Berlin's Transport Senator and a member of the CDU party, announced a new plan for air purification. The plan includes the cancellation of up to 25 30 km/h zones on main roads.
The 30 km/h zones on main roads were introduced a few years ago due to poor air quality. However, according to Ute Schneider, the air is now better, and the speed limit can no longer be justified.
The transport senator's administration has looked at how children walk and where school routes are. The new plan does not affect the standard speed in settlements, which remains at 50 km/h.
Ute Schneider is willing to meet the conversation requirement from her coalition partner, the SPD, regarding the abolition of 30 km/h zones on main roads. The SPD, however, has concerns about the impact of the speed limit changes on heavily trafficked school routes.
The SPD wants answers about the examination of these heavily frequented school routes. Ute Schneider emphasised that everyone must be convinced that the examination was carried out properly.
Despite the need for additional consultation from the SPD faction, Ute Schneider remains unbothered and is willing to meet their requirements. The SPD does not appear to be trying to delay the decision, according to Ute Schneider.
The new air purification plan was conducted by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR). The research suggests that the air quality has improved significantly, making the 30 km/h zones on main roads unnecessary.
However, the speed limit could remain on streets with high school traffic, despite being unnecessary for clean air. The decision aims to ensure the safety of children walking to school while promoting a more efficient traffic flow.
This move is expected to bring about a significant change in the city's traffic dynamics, making travel on main roads faster and more convenient. The impact of this decision on air quality and road safety will be closely monitored in the coming months.
