Severe storms bypassed RLP, leaving NRW in a critical state.
In a relief for many, the weather situation in Germany has started to improve on Wednesday, with temperatures rising to 19 to 22 degrees Celsius and partly cloudy conditions with little chance of showers. The north still experiences some rain and showers, while the south enjoys dry and mostly sunny conditions. Winds are mostly weakening except for gusts near the northern coasts.
However, the respite is not universal. In the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, emergency services have been in continuous operation due to heavy rain. Basements and apartments have been flooded, and entire streets have been inundated. This has led to several incidents, although the situation remains under control as of early afternoon.
The Rhineland-Palatinate High Water Forecast Center advises avoiding coastal areas, low-lying regions, and basements during floods. Emergency services in Mönchengladbach have rescued a family from a flooded apartment, emphasising the importance of heeding such warnings. If caught off guard by flooding or a tidal wave, moving upwards is the best course of action.
Rivers and streams in the West Palatinate are expected to rise in the next few hours, but flooding is ruled out by fire departments in this area. This is a positive development, but residents are urged to stay vigilant and follow updates from local authorities.
The heavy rain showers in Rhineland-Palatinate, which led to the deployments but did not result in severe weather, are expected to decrease in the afternoon. The German Weather Service (DWD) lifted the severe weather warning on Tuesday morning, but another front is expected on Thursday and Friday, with Thursday seeing sunny spells but also possible showers and thunderstorms.
It's worth noting that the DWD previously warned of heavy rain of the highest level, with potential for flooding, aquaplaning, and landslides. A small landslide was reported in the West Palatinate district of Kusel, underscoring the need for caution.
Despite the heavy rainfall, there have been no significant incidents or deployments in Rhineland-Palatinate until early afternoon. The weather in Ahrtal, Kreis Ahrweiler, started raining early in the morning, but the DWD warned Kreis Ahrweiler of extremely heavy rain.
As the weather improves, it's a reminder for everyone to stay safe and follow local weather advisories. Whether it's flooding or stormy weather, it's crucial to prioritise safety and take necessary precautions.
